What is clearing and how does university clearing work?

The university clearing system is an annual period (usually opening in July and closing in October) that provides universities with the chance to fill remaining course places before the start of the new academic year.

University clearing is perfect if you are concerned about potential results and want a back-up option, want to make a late application, or have changed your mind about the choice of where to study.

You can still apply for Clearing if you have already made a UCAS application this year – the steps you follow may be slightly different but we’ll guide you through the process.

See below how 2025 clearing at the University of Northampton works:

1. From 5 July, you can apply for a course through Clearing at the University of Northampton if:

  • you already have your exam results, but you have no offers
  • you didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
  • you didn’t receive any offers (or none that you wanted to accept)
  • you’ve declined your firm place using ‘decline my place’ in UCAS Hub
  • you’re reconsidering your firm place choice and are considering the University of Northampton

2. Look through our courses and identify the ones that interest you.

3. Contact us by telephone to see if we can offer you a place through university clearing. No matter what grades you received, give us a call and talk to our tutors who will look for the most appropriate course for you.

4. You need to accept our offer. This needs to be accepted according to the instructions in your offer email. You cannot accept our offer through UCAS whilst you are holding a firm choice elsewhere, you will need to decline your firm place using ‘decline my place’ in UCAS Hub.

5. You should submit any qualifications, certificates and forms we need. Then, we will confirm your place and you will receive an official letter from UCAS.

Please note: last date to enrol is Monday 20 October 2025.
