This course will provide you with the chance to study across two departments to develop an understanding in human development, educational and sport issues. This course’s modules are flexible and allow you to tailor them to your interests and is ideal for those who want to study  diverse subject areas.

We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, which is why if you complete our Employability Plus Gold programme or Changemaker Gold certificate alongside your studies and if you haven’t secured full-time employment 12 months after graduating* we will secure a three – six month paid internship for you, or support you into postgraduate study.

Optional Work Placement Year

You are encouraged to undertake a year-long placement in between Stages Two and Three of study. If you meet the entry criteria, and choose to take up a placement year you will find it an invaluable experience that helps you to apply your learning in your final year and prepares you for your career. We offer a lot of support in helping you to find a placement, which can be in the UK or overseas.

Course Details

This course places a strong emphasis on the application of theories and concepts to practical issues such as the barriers to sport participation and the teaching of sports coaching. The course covers issues and methods of enquiry in present-day psychology and its applications to areas such as work, education, physical and mental health and crime.

The programme provides useful experience for those intending to work in a range of career areas from mentoring to sport coaching. The course will also provide you with the skills to go on to further study and conduct in-depth research within these subjects.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are standard. A typical offer would be BCC at A Level or DMM at BTEC. Applicants are normally expected to hold GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above, or an approved equivalent. In addition, applicants are expected to have studied a physical education, sports science or related science subject at A Level, BTEC level 3 diploma or equivalent qualifications.

  • IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands

Course Content

You will acquire skills in the design and execution of a range of psychological research methods, the analysis and interpretation of data and report writing. You will also explore the many ways that psychology and other social science disciplines are applied to real-world problems including those in sport, which will develop your research, thinking and communication skills within both subject areas.

Additional costs

Additional costs will be incurred if you decide to participate in optional field trips/visits as part of your course. The exact cost will depend upon the location chosen for the trip.

You will need to wear suitable sports kit for practical sessions as part of the course. We can purchase Sport and Exercise kit (polo shirts and hoodies) but these are not compulsory. The exact cost of kit will be provided at the start of the course.

If you choose to study a Joint Honours degree at the University of Northampton you can select a programme that suits your interests and strengths. This option opens up a host of possibilities to you, offering a wide range of opportunities for careers and further study at your fingertips. In the Joint Honours programme, you will select two subjects as joint for stage one. You may continue with equal emphasis on two subjects as a joint degree in stages two and three, or switch to a major or minor split. The degree title is derived from the two subjects.
