English language requirements
All International and EU students applying for a course with us must meet the following minimum English language requirements:
- for study at undergraduate level – minimum standard – IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band (or equivalent)
- for study at postgraduate level – minimum standard – IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band (or equivalent)
- for study at postgraduate research (PGR) level – minimum standard – IELTS 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each band (or equivalent)
Some courses will have a higher English language requirement or specifically require an IELTS test score, such as Nursing courses.
We consider equivalent qualifications, and can provide English Language courses to help you meet requirements. Visa requirements can apply.
Equivalent qualifications guidance
We consider various qualifications from overseas, including high school level English qualifications and a range of English language tests. The minimum levels required in the most commonly presented English tests are detailed in our Comparison of English language test scores.
We also consider Pre-sessional English programmes taken at other UK institutions, providing we are satisfied that the programme meets our minimum English language entry requirements.
If you have successfully completed a degree or postgraduate diploma taught in English and are applying for a Bachelors or Masters degree, or studied in a majority native English speaking country, you will not usually need to provide other evidence of English language ability.
Please note that, in assessing whether you have sufficient English language to successfully complete your course, we consider these qualifications alongside other evidence of English language ability included in your application, for example in the personal statement. Some courses do not accept certain qualifications, or ask for higher levels of achievement. Where this is the case, it will be made clear on our Course pages.
Pre-sessional Academic English (PEP) language courses
If you do not meet these requirements, we offer pre-sessional academic English (PEP) language courses to help you to develop your competence and confidence using English in an academic setting.
If your application does not meet the English language requirement but we would like to make you an offer to study then we would automatically assess you for the PEP (including the length and cost of the programme) and make passing the programme a condition of your offer.
You will need to take the IELTS for UKVI examination in order to assess how long you would need to study the PEP; the length of the programme is based on a student’s IELTS score.
4 week programme
We offer a 4 week programme if you have the appropriate IELTS score for direct entry onto an academic programme, but would like to improve your academic and study skills before you embark on you degree programme. You will find more information on the course page.
Important information regarding visas
If you are interested in studying a Pre-sessional English Programme or NQF Level 5 course or lower (such as a HND), you will be required to sit an IELTS for UKVI exam (a Secured English Language Test [SELT]) in order to get a Tier 4 student visa.
Qualifications that are not SELTs, such as Academic IELTS, cannot be used in applications for a Tier 4 student visa to study our Pre-sessional English programme (PEP), but can be used in visa applications to study a Bachelor or Masters course.
For further details on UKVI approved tests please see Applying for a UK visa: approved English language test.
