Case Study: Sathish is ready to take shipping business on a voyage to global success
An established shipping company in the United Arab Emirates has turned to a University of Northampton student to help them transform it into a major global player.
“I love challenges and this is the best challenge I have faced so far in my life,” said Sathish Raj, who has been appointed business development manager for the Abu Dhabi Shipping Agency (ADSA) – while still studying for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) postgraduate qualification.
Founded in 1979, ADSA hit choppy waters during the last recession, losing two key clients. As a consequence, the firm adopted a stabilising policy of looking after its remaining customers and putting expansion plans on hold.
Now, the business is looking to grow, and has tasked 24-year-old Sathish with plotting the best route to expansion.

Our new campus opens its doors in September 2018 and while Waterside will be home to most of our teaching, we’ll also be making use of the excellent facilities around the town. We’ll also be retaining some facilities at our current campuses (Park and Avenue) on a temporary basis for the initial period. These will mostly be used to offer off-campus accommodation options to make sure we have a great range of rooms to suit everyone.More about our campuses »

Assistance and guidance may be provided by our Business School in scoping and developing your project. Students who wish to develop a new business idea or start up as the basis of their project may be supported to apply for a UK Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur visa extension under the entrepreneur’s pathway.
If you are studying this course full-time you can elect to participate in a Work Placement – completing the module Organisational Culture and Work Environments, instead of Business research (consultancy project). These placements can enable you to develop your skills and knowledge in a work environment, giving you an advantage over the competition for jobs and scholarships after you graduate.
Your placement will last between six and 12 months, it will need to be appropriate to your level of study and you should also be paid for this work. We will support you in finding and securing a suitable placement opportunity, however it must be noted that placements are highly competitive and there is no guarantee of a placement offer being made by an employer.
Whilst on a work placement you will attend two full-day workshops held at the university, and complete a research project based on the organisation in which you are working.
If you think a work placement is not for you, or are unable to secure a placement within the first nine months of the programme, then you will be automatically transferred to our Business Research (Consultancy) Project module to gain the required credits to complete the MBA. The Business Research (Consultancy) Project module will be taught in three full-day intensive workshops and you will be supported with one-to-one supervision. You will have approximately three months to work on your project and will complete your MBA programme within 12 months. You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills through the taught employability skills programme, where you will be given opportunities for one-to-one support and guidance for professional and career development.
