Are you naturally curious about why people commit crime and what can motivate them to cause serious harm? Would you like to explore these issues in real criminal justice settings working alongside professionals? These are just some of the experiences that are on offer during the BA Criminal Justice course. Our Criminal Justice System is underpinned by theories of retribution, punishment and deterrence but the impact of these on reducing crime deserves some critical thought. Criminal justice policies, practices and legislation have not been modernised or developed for decades, if not centuries, despite an abundance of research. Do you want to be part of a new era of criminal justice that can challenge the current ethos? If you want to make a difference and gain real experience working within this exciting field this degree course has been designed with you in mind.
This Criminal Justice degree has been developed using the skills, knowledge and expertise of our multi-disciplinary team. The course will take you on a journey through the criminal justice system; the good, the bad and the ugly, exploring key areas such as the legal system, policing, sentencing, rehabilitation, prisons and criminal behaviours. You will explore the intricacies and controversies of current practice, critically considering where improvements can be made.
Using a mix of classroom-based learning, skills practice, shadowing opportunities and voluntary placements with local criminal justice agencies this course will develop you into a confident and knowledgeable practitioner, ready for employment in many criminal justice-based fields. You will have the chance to apply your learning in the real world fully preparing you for your future criminal justice career.
A typical offer to study this Criminal Justice course would be:
We welcome applications from students with a mix of A levels and BTEC/Cambridge Technical qualifications.
We welcome international applications and applications from those with a range of non-traditional educational or professional qualifications.
Mature students with relevant experience as practitioners will be considered without normal entry requirements.
There are opportunities for current practitioners to gain accreditation for prior certificated or experiential learning; these will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

You will learn by gaining direct experience through a voluntary work placement with a local criminal justice agency. Your third-year assessment will be a reflective piece allowing you to showcase your learning and how you have used this in practice to make a real impact.
During your first year of study you will explore the journey through the criminal justice system to gain an understanding of both victims/survivors and offenders experiences. You will explore crime in local communities and current issues such as the over policing of diverse communities, youth offending and knife crime.
You will learn about criminal behaviours and what triggers and motivates people to offend, exploring the impact of social media and youth culture. You will have the opportunity to manage a crime scene as we develop your investigative practice skills and professional curiosity.
You will shadow various professionals at points in year one. During Year one we will develop your skills in academic research, problem solving and communication.
