Joint Honours Entrepreneurship (minor) equips students with experiences of entrepreneurship to develop their entrepreneurial skills, spirit and mindset. It enables you to grow as future thinkers and leaders, confident with their business acumen, and able to respond in creative ways to dynamic environments.

Course Content


  • The programme provides you with the opportunity to network, experience and really ‘feel’ what it’s like to be an entrepreneur. You will engage with numerous opportunities to meet entrepreneurs, work with real small businesses and develop your entrepreneurial skills to enable you to start your own business in the future.

    The key elements of this course are built upon a sound understanding of enterprise and entrepreneurship, what it means to entrepreneurial and how do you become more so, plus the experience and networking required to be more enterprising in how we do business.

    As a joint honours minor subject it will compliment your major subject and allow you to develop your entrepreneurial and business skills in your chosen sector. Popular combinations include Events Management, Marketing, Sports Studies, Digital Marketing and Management.

    Year 1

    You will gain understanding of key entrepreneurial skills and how entrepreneurs operate in today’s changing business environment. You will also develop an understanding of the ‘entrepreneurs toolkit’ for business, what is involved and how you can develop your skills to make it happen.

    Year 2

    In your second year, you will learn more about the role that innovation plays in entrepreneurial businesses and further develop your design thinking and creativity capabilities. You will learn about the management of small businesses, what makes them different and the subsequent strategies they should take.

    Year 3

    Your final year will comprise of a new venture planning module which takes an in depth view of developing your own idea based on what you have studied throughout the course, and an entrepreneurial strategy module which considers growth, tactics and strategic entrepreneurial options.

    Entrepreneurship (minor only) modules

  • Our Entrepreneurship Joint Honours can be studied in combination with Events Management.

    This joint honours is a ‘minor only’. The award for this course will be a BA if taken as a major or joint. Students may be awarded a BSc if they study this subject as a minor subject and pair it with a BSc subject. Please refer to the Academic Regulations for more information on Joint Honours Degree designations.

    If you choose to study a Joint Honours degree at the University of Northampton you can select a programme that suits your interests and strengths. This option opens up a host of possibilities to you, offering a wide range of opportunities for careers and further study at your fingertips. In the Joint Honours programme, you will select two subjects as joint for stage one. You may continue with equal emphasis on two subjects as a joint degree in stages two and three, or switch to a major or minor split. The degree title is derived from the two subjects.

    With a Joint Honours degree you can ensure that your programme has:

    • Breadth: you are not focused on a single specialism, but are able to study across two disciplines
    • Flexibility: you can adjust the balance of your programme depending on the interests and skills you develop during your time with us
    • Embedded skills: you will have all the graduate level skills that employers are looking for
    • Student support: your own personal tutor will work with you as you learn and progress.

    • IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands for study at undergraduate level

  • You are encouraged to undertake a year-long placement in between Stages Two and Three of study. If you meet the entry criteria, and choose to take up a placement year you will find it an invaluable experience that helps you to apply your learning in your final year and prepares you for your career. We offer a lot of support in helping you to find a placement, which can be in the UK or overseas.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Most assessment tends to be coursework based which is likely to include business reports, projects, essays, consultancy projects and presentations.

    Are there any special features for this course?
    • Students are encouraged to engage in and be actively part of many special events which take place across the University of Northampton each year. These include Subject Futures Week, Enterprise and Employability week and Changemaker Week. Full details and participation are led through the course team.
    • You will have the opportunity to the achieve the Enterprise Certificate while studying your compulsory modules. This gives you an additional qualification plus those who complete receive a six-month business incubator stay along with lifetime Santandar business support.
    • Completing the Changemaker Certificate as part of your studies will compliment your degree and give you an ‘edge’ over other graduates.

Careers can be wide and varied as you are studying an entrepreneurial business degree. Some students choose to set up and run their own business during or shortly after completion of their studies, while others focus on small business management, consultancy and new venture development. You have the advantage of in depth knowledge of entrepreneurial thinking, skills, attitude and mindset along with your other subject specialism where it can be applied.
