Accounting is a major and integral aspect of business life in all sectors and across nations. This programmes offers you experience in recording and reporting financial performance, monitoring and controlling activity and resources, sound operational and strategic decisions and more. You can choose to specialise in either financial services, taxation, risk management or information systems. The degree is designed to complement many other subjects offered within the Joint Honours programme.

Optional Work Placement Year

If you meet the entry criteria, and choose to take a placement year you will find it an invaluable experience that helps you to apply your learning in your final year and prepares you for your career. We offer support in helping you to find a placement, which can be in the UK or overseas.

Course Details

Over the course of the degree you will be introduced to theory and principles of accountancy, beginning with the fundamentals such as numeracy, the use of management systems and the importance of knowledge and appreciation of key organisational financial objectives.

There is the option to take a placement year in the UK or overseas, where you will be supported by the Centre for Work-Based Learning. Representatives from Accounting professional bodies and visiting speakers from a variety of businesses attend the University regularly.

Entry Requirements

A typical offer would be BCC at A Level or DMM at BTEC. Standard entry requirements apply. In addition, applicants should hold Mathematics GCSE at grade C/4 or above or equivalent. We welcome international applicants.

All International and EU students applying for a course with us must meet the following minimum English language requirements:

  • Minimum standard – IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent)
    for study at undergraduate level.

Course Content

During the first stage, you will be introduced to the important conceptual issues which underpin accounting and you will start to learn some of the techniques and skills required. At this stage, you will be concerned with recording, reporting and interpreting basic financial and cost accounting information. You will be required to study three compulsory modules in accounting and three modules in your other chosen subject area. The accounting compulsory modules include an introduction to financial reporting, a computer-based cost accounting module and development in numeracy to ensure the appropriate level for continued study.

Joint Honours Study

If you choose to study a Joint Honours degree at the University of Northampton you can select a programme that suits your interests and strengths. This option opens up a host of possibilities to you, offering a wide range of opportunities for careers and further study at your fingertips. In the Joint Honours programme, you will select two subjects as joint for stage one. You may continue with equal emphasis on two subjects as a joint degree in stages two and three, or switch to a major or minor split. The degree title is derived from the two subjects.
