TEF Gold. Teaching Excellence Framework.

Overview

Our single honours degree in Sport Development and Physical Education explores the ways that sport, physical education and physical activity is delivered and organised across schools and local communities. You are encouraged to think critically about current and historical practice in sport development and Physical Education and reflect on your own experiences of sport and PE.

We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, which is why if you complete our Employability Plus Gold programme or Changemaker Gold certificate alongside your studies and if you haven’t secured full-time employment 12 months after graduating* we will secure a three – six month paid internship for you, or support you into postgraduate study.

*with a 2:2 degree classification or higher

Course Content

  • This course allows you to study key disciplines within sport development and physical education and includes an opportunity to undertake a work placement at a local sport or physical education provider. A strong emphasis is placed on the application of theory to understanding real-world issues such as barriers to participation, performance pathways, coaching and teaching practice and government influence on sport.

The course provides a mixture of classroom-based sessions (to introduce theories and concepts) and practical activities that enable you to develop your own coaching/teaching delivery styles to children and adults.

There are also several opportunities to learn ‘off campus’ through study trips, work placements and gain teaching/coaching practice at local schools.

Alongside the degree, you are also encouraged to take an active engagement in practical work experience with internships at the local professional football, rugby and cricket clubs, and volunteering in community sports clubs. We also offer the opportunity of attaining coaching qualifications whilst studying, which often run on campus. This varies year to year, but in the past has included Level 1 NGB courses, lifeguard, first aid and disability inclusion training and we work closely with local sport partners to offer reduced rates on courses wherever possible.

Graduates from this course should be excellently placed to pursue a career in sport development, sport coaching, move into further study to become teachers, or apply the transferable skills nurtured to a range of other graduate careers.

  • The Integrated Foundation Year (IFY) offers a new and exciting route into studying for a degree, attracting ambitious and driven students who are willing to learn and advance.

If you have non-standard qualifications or do not quite meet the admissions requirements we can offer you a fantastic opportunity to study a four year programme which includes an Integrated Foundation Year. The Integrated Foundation Year will help you develop the theoretical/practical and academic skills you need, in order to successfully progress to the full award.

Featuring a reduced tuition fee in the first year, our four-year courses will enable you to successfully follow the degree pathway of your choice while gaining essential study skills. The foundation year of your chosen degree will be studied on a full-time basis and is aimed at supporting the transition to higher education. Years two, three and four are then studied as a standard degree programme.

  • Standard entry requirements apply. A typical offer would be CCC at A Level or DMM at BTEC. If you have non-traditional qualifications or have experience working within sport development, PE and/or youth sport then we will consider your application.

You will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check on admission in order to go out on work placement, which is a mandatory part of the course.

For more more information on how to make an application, please visit our How to Apply page.

If you are an International student and would like information on making an application, please see our How to Apply page.

    Taylor - Sport Dev

“The lecturers have been incredibly supportive. From having learnt how to approach different teaching styles and how to teach in a variety of ways I feel I have learnt a lot about myself in terms of my own style of teaching whilst increasing my confidence through completing a work placement.

The placement allowed me to understand how to react to different behaviours and has reassured me that I can deal with any behavioural issue that may arise during my career.

Work hard, but more importantly enjoy your whole journey and don’t shy away from the unknown.”
