Professor Anne-Marie Kilday

Professor Anne-Marie Kilday is Vice Chancellor and Professor of Criminal History at the University of Northampton and joined the University on 1 August 2022. She writes and researches on various aspects of criminal history, particularly focusing on violent behaviour and gendered criminality. Professor Kilday started her academic career in Scotland working at the University of Strathclyde and then the University of Glasgow. She joined Oxford Brookes University in 2000 as a Lecturer in Early Modern History and progressed her career at the University securing various promotions from Principal Lecturer through to Dean.

She was promoted into the senior leadership team becoming the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Transfer and Impact in 2012 and then became Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Experience & University Community, with institutional responsibility for all aspects of both student and staff experience in 2018 and continued in that role until she left for the University of Northampton. Anne-Marie enjoys supporting Oxford United and Celtic football clubs, playing table tennis, reading true crime and crime fiction, and chasing after her four cats Duncan, Angus, Vasquez and Rori, and her three dogs Scruffy, Aeryn and Vada!

In accordance with the Articles of Government, the Vice Chancellor is responsible for:

  • Leadership of the staff and appointment, grading and appraisal of staff
  • Preparation of the budget and draft financial statements
  • Determination of University’s academic activities
  • Maintenance of student discipline
  • Drafting and implementing the Strategic Plan

The Vice Chancellor’s leadership of the staff includes the line management of the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer. The Vice Chancellor also chairs the University Leadership Team, which meets fortnightly.

In accordance with the University Bye-Laws, the Vice Chancellor is a senior post holder and is ex officio both the Chair of the University Senate and a Governor, being the only member of the University Leadership Team on the Board of Governors. The Vice Chancellor is also the Accountable Officer under the arrangements for access to public funds supervised through the regulator, the Office for Students.
