Our MSc in International Banking and Finance is a specialist degree that covers the themes of international banking, finance, risk management, regulation and ethics, Islamic banking and investment analysis to reflect the changing nature of international banking in the 21st century. The compulsory modules on this course will help you prepare for senior management and specialist roles in banking and international finance. The dissertation is an opportunity for you to apply research skills to develop your understanding of the world of banking and finance.

Course Content


  • This course is designed to complement the range of knowledge and skills that you will have acquired in your previous study and work experience. Studying International Banking and Finance will provide you with theoretical and practical frameworks as well as analytical techniques and key transferable skills. In addition it will develop your ability to apply relevant knowledge and skills and will boost your confidence in exercising your professional judgement in different scenarios. The modules and teaching on the course helps to prepare you for careers in international financial regulation, banking, insurance and corporate governance.

        The purpose of this module is to develop students understanding of the effects of global finance on business and the functions of global financial management. Students will be required to evaluate company performance based on theory and practice.

        The purpose of this module is to develop students? critical knowledge and analytical skills in assessing risk and returns and evaluating investment opportunities in different asset classes and investment funds.

        The purpose of this module is to apply knowledge gained on the programme by carrying out independent research on a relevant topic of their choice and develop an ability to present analyse and evaluate information in a reflective and critical manner.

        The module provides students with a sound grasp of the development of and current operational structures and systems of both international banking and financial markets. The module concentrates on the major banking and capital market developments and critically examines regional banking and market systems (e.g. European Japanese and Islamic models).

        This module explores financial reporting standards and analysis frameworks providing an opportunity to understand the best practices and the challenges faced by global banking and non-banking financial institutions. It will focus on interpretation of financial statements whilst exploring the effect of regulatory framework on relevant country specific financial reporting standards.

        Using quantitative techniques to evaluate information students will analyse the impact of risk in order to make informed decisions within dynamic and complex financial markets. Students will evaluate the influence of risk on the Global Financial Crisis and episodes of financial stress in individual countries and institutions.

        Status: Designate
        The module focuses on the trends in international banking and regulatory and supervisory issues. Students will explore contemporary issues in the banking industry focusing on changes to capital requirements regulatory and supervisory oversight and risk management in global banks.

    The CISI University Partnership means that we have mapped modules on our accredited programmes to the CISI’s globally recognised qualification exams. As a partner institution, we offer our students on the accredited programme an opportunity to sit for CISI exam and achieve professional qualification while they are studying. Students are also eligible for the CISI student membership and discount on purchase of exam workbooks.

  • The industry placement enables you to develop your skills and knowledge in a real-world work environment, whilst completing an applied research project. This will give you an advantage over the competition for jobs and scholarships after you graduate and could be a good starting point for setting up your own consultancy business.

    Your placement will need to be appropriate to your level of study and you should also be paid for this work. We will support you in finding and securing a suitable placement opportunity, however it must be noted that placements are highly competitive and there is no guarantee of a placement offer being made by an employer.

    If you are unable or unwilling to progress with an industry placement, for whatever reason, you will have the option to transfer onto our Dissertation and Research Methods module in order to gain the required credits to complete your programme of study.

  • How will I be assessed?

    A variety of assessment methods are used in this course including reports, essays, presentations, student-led seminars, workshops, e-based assessments and examinations.

  • Applicants will normally hold a recognised first or second class honours degree from a UK university or international equivalent in finance, banking, accounting or a related discipline. If you hold professional qualifications you may be eligible to enter this course. Professional qualifications considered would include ACA, AIA, ACCA, CIMA, AIB, IFA, IFS and ACII, if they are obtained by examination.

    • Minimum standard – IELT 6.5 (or equivalent) for study at postgraduate level.

    Fees quoted relate to study in the Academic Year 19/20 only and may be subject to inflationary increases in future years.

    Year 2 (Placement Route Only)

    Year 2 Placement Fee: £500 * (for placements starting in September 2021 or January 2022)

    *The placement fee amount will only be charged to you after you secure a placement and are enrolled on the work based project in year 2 of your course. You will not be charged this fee if you do not secure a work placement.

    Postgraduate Loans
    If you are starting a postgraduate Master’s course in 2020/21 either full-time or part-time* you may be able to apply for a postgraduate loan through Student Finance England.

    *Please note that the maximum period of study allowed for part-time courses is two years.
