What to expect

As an International Student, I did not know what to expect studying at the University of Northampton (UON). Honestly, I was walking into university life blind, but I knew it would not be like anything I had experienced back home, as many things are very different. I realised quite late about a lot of things the University of Northampton has to offer, and I’d say I did not use as much of the resources as I should have during my university journey. It’s a different rule book and I wish someone gave me a list of what to expect before I started my journey at University of Northampton.

Academic-wise: It’s all on You!

One of the biggest shocks I got is how independent learning is at university. Back home, lecturers will basically spoon feed students’ information and chase us down for work. Of course, you have your lecturers, and you can speak to them when you need support, however, you will spend majority of your time doing self-learning and researching. What I wish I knew sooner was the amount of academic resource that is provided by the University to help with our research such as NELSON. So, make sure you ask about these resources to make use of it all!

Social Life and Making Friends

There is a long list of communities, societies, and sport’s clubs available through the Students’ Union these will suit different individual preferences to explore your hobbies and interests while meeting different people from all backgrounds. I did not get involved in any clubs until my third year and I wish I knew beforehand. Going to any social event is the fastest way to meet people and the university has a very diverse student body, so get prepared and embrace meeting people.

Campus Life

Waterside Campus is very modern and compact. Everything you need from accommodation to food spots are all within walking distance. Buying food everyday on campus isn’t sustainable for your finances long term, so make sure to consider other budget friendly options like meal planning, shopping at Aldi/Lidl.

Managing Money

Money disappears FAST! Every time I step out of the house, money is spent, so, you will need a part time job. You can get some on Indeed, in town, and of course UON offer great student roles such as becoming a Student Ambassador or Student Influencer. Utilise your student benefits as much as possible. Many stores provide student discounts and UNIDAYS has offers as well, they are your best friends for shopping smarter.

Mental Health & Wellbeing

University is fun and it can also be overwhelming. Juggling many things at once can take a toll and it is normal if you struggle, so don’t hesitate to ask for help. There are plenty of support services available at UON, including accommodation, mental health, finance, and more.

Referencing

Plagiarism is a big thing at UON. It’s taken very seriously here, so learn your Harvard Referencing correctly. It will save you a lot academically and mentally. The University has a free guide online, so make sure you have a look through that. Alternatively, you can contact the library and learning team who can help you go through it.

All in all, your journey at University of Northampton will be a learn as you go experience. Be open to experiencing as much as you can and take everything in stride! It’s going to be one of the most memorable years of your life.
