    Overview

This Level 7, 20-credit course can be taken as a single module for continuing professional development or as part of our MSc Public Health course. You will develop comprehensive knowledge on how to identify and assess the health needs of a target population.  You will also develop the skills needed to design, implement and evaluate a public health project intervention to build community capacity and empower the population to improve their health and wellbeing.

    Highlights

    • Use credits to build towards the MSc Public Health
    • Opportunity to design a public health project on an identified health need in a community
    • Pro-active approach to teaching and learning

    Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally hold a recognised First- or Second-class Honours degree in a subject area that demonstrates applicability to public health practice including:

    • Dentistry, pharmacy, biology, medicine, public health, nursing, environmental health, biomedical health/science, podiatry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, microbiology, biochemistry.
    • Homeopathic Medicine (including degrees in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery).
    • Zoology and most medical/health background undergraduate degrees. This includes degrees such as BSc Profusion Technology and BSc Radiology.

Applications listing degrees not shown above may be referred to the course tutor to assess suitability. We will need to see evidence of:

    • Degree transcripts with exact modules studied.
    • Evidence of experience in public health (if applicable).
    • References for suitability.

    What You'll Learn

This module will be delivered by a range of teaching methods such as core lectures, group work, online activities, use of case studies and directed learning approaches. Shared learning with other professionals will be a focus of this course and you will be encouraged to develop a critical evaluative approach to the knowledge which underpins present-day public health practice.

Teaching for this module is a blend of face to face and online sessions. Module assessment strategy will be to design a small-scale intervention for an identified health need for a target population along with a 40-minute oral presentation of the designed health needs intervention, while ensuring all module learning outcomes are met.
