Overview


This is a level 7, 20 credit standalone module for continuing professional development which sits within our MSc Public Health Course. You will develop a range of theories and concepts which underpin health protection and prevention, including topics such as non-communicable disease, sexually transmitted infections, travel associated illness and environmental contamination and their impact on health. Students will also develop the skills needed to write a report fit for the real world.

Entry Requirements


Applicants will normally hold a recognised First- or Second-Class Honours degree in a subject area that demonstrates applicability to public health practice including:

  • Dentistry, pharmacy, biology, medicine, public health, nursing, environmental health, biomedical health/science, podiatry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, microbiology, biochemistry.
  • Homeopathic Medicine (including degrees in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery).
  • Zoology and most medical/health background undergraduate degrees. This includes degrees such as BSc Profusion Technology and BSc Radiology.
  • Applications listing degrees not shown above may be referred to the course tutor to assess suitability. We will need to see evidence of:

    • Degree transcripts with exact modules studied.
    • Evidence of experience in public health (if applicable).
    • References for suitability.

Course Content


  • This module considers the complexities associated with health protection and prevention.

    Topics covered are:

    • Non-communicable disease
    • Lifestyle choices
    • Surveillance and monitoring
    • Travel-associated illness
    • Environmental contamination
    • Ethics and legislation

    Students will write a report on a relevant topic of interest, demonstrating their knowledge and making recommendations for future public health delivery.

    This module is taught using Active Blended Learning, whereby students will experience a wide range of learning opportunities, such as online sessions and activities, face to face classroom activities, case studies, group work.

  • How often do I have to attend university?

    The module consists of six taught sessions, which usually take place on a Wednesday.

    How will I be assessed?

    Students are required to produce a 3,500 word report demonstrating that all the learning outcomes have been addressed.
