Overview


This Level 7, 20-credit course can be taken as a single module for continuing professional development or as part of our MSc Public Health course. You will develop comprehensive knowledge on how to identify and assess the health needs of a target population.  You will also develop the skills needed to design, implement and evaluate a public health project intervention to build community capacity and empower the population to improve their health and wellbeing.

Entry Requirements


Applicants will normally hold a recognised First- or Second-class Honours degree in a subject area that demonstrates applicability to public health practice including:

  • Dentistry, pharmacy, biology, medicine, public health, nursing, environmental health, biomedical health/science, podiatry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, microbiology, biochemistry.
  • Homeopathic Medicine (including degrees in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery).
  • Zoology and most medical/health background undergraduate degrees. This includes degrees such as BSc Profusion Technology and BSc Radiology.
  • Applications listing degrees not shown above may be referred to the course tutor to assess suitability. We will need to see evidence of:

    • Degree transcripts with exact modules studied.
    • Evidence of experience in public health (if applicable).
    • References for suitability.

Course Content


  • This module will be delivered by a range of teaching methods such as core lectures, group work, online activities, use of case studies and directed learning approaches. Shared learning with other professionals will be a focus of this course and you will be encouraged to develop a critical evaluative approach to the knowledge which underpins present-day public health practice.

    Teaching for this module is a blend of face to face and online sessions. Module assessment strategy will be to design a small-scale intervention for an identified health need for a target population along with a 40-minute oral presentation of the designed health needs intervention, while ensuring all module learning outcomes are met.

    The content of this module includes:

    • Development of public health from the 20th Century
    • International and national public health perspectives
    • Political influences on health
    • The role of multilateral and bilateral funding organisations
    • Agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations
    • Healthy public policy
    • Health inequalities
    • Health needs assessment
    • Project management skills
    • Community development and legal and ethical principles.
