Finding balance in a new beginning
Starting university, especially in a new town, can be incredibly challenging. Adjusting to new surroundings and managing the workload can sometimes feel overwhelming.
I’ve experienced these struggles myself, and I’ve learned how important it is to reach out for support when you need it.
Taking care of yourself through nature walks, staying organised, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can make a big difference.
How I look after my mental health and wellbeing
The university campus has many green spaces that I walk through daily as a commuter. I’ve found that taking a stroll through the parks or choosing a slightly longer route to class helps me get some fresh air and feel more awake, especially on days when I’m not at my best.
Creating daily to-do lists helps me stay organised and manage my workload without feeling overwhelmed. This routine has been especially important as I adjust to the demands of university life. My organisation even extends to preparing lunches to ensure I eat well throughout the day and leaving early for class, so I don’t feel anxious or rushed before the day begins.

Support on Campus
Sometimes, even with all these strategies, it’s still not enough, and that’s why the support available on campus has been so important for me. Whether it’s reaching out to my personal academic tutor for help when needed or accessing the mental health services, these resources have made a real difference.
For those who find it difficult to speak out, I’ve found a service called Spectrum.Life, it can be really helpful, as you can contact them via phone or text for 24/7 support. They also provide articles and resources focused on wellbeing.
In addition, the campus has excellent mental health and counselling teams who are always there to offer support.
UON are always here to support your mental health and wellbeing.
