    The Foundation Year provides an alternative pathway into degree-level study for motivated students who may not meet standard entry requirements. It is designed to build the academic knowledge, confidence and study skills needed to progress successfully to a full degree.

    You will study the ‘Foundation Year leading to’ as preparation for a standard undergraduate course, upon successful completion of the ‘Foundation Year leading to’ you will be eligible to progress to your chosen 3-year degree.

    The following Foundation Year programmes are available and are designed to support students in developing the skills needed for degree‑level study:

    • Foundation Year leading to BSc Adult Nursing
    • Foundation Year leading to BSc Learning Disability Nursing
    • Foundation Year leading to BSc Occupational Therapy
    • Foundation Year leading to BSc Podiatry

    Entry Requirements


    To view the entry requirements, please select the relevant Foundation Year programme. For further information, or to discuss this in more detail, please contact our Admissions team at admissions@northampton.ac.uk.

    • DEE at A Level or, MPP at BTEC/Cambridge Technical Extended Diplomas or, Pass (D or E) at T Level.

    All applicants must have:

    English Language and Maths GCSE, or the equivalent, at grade C/4 or above. These must be achieved prior to commencement of the course. (Common equivalents are: Functional skills level 2, Key skills level 2, Adult Literacy/Numeracy Level 2).

    The following are essential requirements for all pre-registration nursing programmes:
    Applicants must be 18 years old when progressing to the pre-registration nursing programme and all applicants must have 10 years of consecutive education.

    • DEE at A Level or, MPP at BTEC/Cambridge Technical Extended Diplomas or, Pass (D or E) at T Level.

    All applicants must have:

    • You will also need to have completed some work or volunteering experience within the Podiatry field. If you do not have this experience you may be asked to gain experience and, as evidence, provide a written reflective account which is to be signed by the facilitator.

    You also need one of the following qualifications:

    • Applicants must also have GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English Language at Grade C/4 or above.
    • Functional Skills/Key Skills or credits taken within an Access to Higher Education course (12 credits at Level 2 or 6 credits at level 3) as equivalent for both Maths and English Language are also acceptable.
    • DEE at A Level or, MPP at BTEC/Cambridge Technical Extended Diplomas or, Pass (D or E) at T Level.
    • You will also need to have five GCSEs including Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above. Functional Skills/Key Skills or credits taken within an Access to Higher Education course (12 credits at Level 2 or 6 credits at level 3) as equivalent for both Maths and English Language are also acceptable.
    • You will need to provide evidence of successful recent study at degree entry level. We will also consider other recognised professional courses that are not listed above, please contact our Admissions Team to discuss this on an individual basis. Each application is considered on its own merit so if you are unsure if you have the skills, knowledge, or qualifications to apply, please contact us.

    All offers of a place on the Foundation Year programmes will be subject to:

    • a successful interview conducted by the University;
    • a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) report;
    • a successful Occupational Health screening.

    Occupational Health Clearance

    All healthcare students are required to undertake a standard Occupational Health Clearance that which will assess your health and immunisation record and assess your fitness for the programme you have chosen. Courses such as midwifery, dental nursing and paramedic science also require an enhanced Occupational Health clearance and appropriate immunisation to undertake exposed prone procedures (EPP). Without the enhanced occupational health clearance your ability to attend some clinical placements/activities in Trust areas may be limited or refused,  causing delays with course progression and employment.

    All International and EU students applying for an occupational therapy course with us must meet the following minimum English language requirements:

    • IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent) with no lower than 7.0 in Reading, Listening and Speaking as well as no lower than 6.5 in Writing for study at the undergraduate level.

    What You'll Learn


    This Foundation Year offers a new and exciting route into studying for a degree, attracting ambitious and driven students who are willing to learn and advance. If you have non-standard qualifications or do not quite meet the admissions requirements for full degree, we can offer you a fantastic opportunity to study one of our  Foundation Year leading to a degree programme. The Foundation Year will help you develop the theoretical and academic skills you need, in order to successfully progress to the full award.

    The foundation year of your chosen degree will be studied on a full-time basis and is aimed at supporting the transition to higher education. Years two, three and four are then studied as a standard degree programme: BSc Adult Nursing; BSc Learning Disability Nursing; BSc Occupational Therapy or BSc Podiatry.
