Choosing Acting at UON
When it came to deciding what to study at university, for me, the choice was clear, I knew I wanted to be an actor. Choosing The University of Northampton’s Acting for Stage and Screen course seemed like the best fit for me as there is focus on in-person and media performances. You also gain the same quality of training with professionals as a traditional conservatoire but in a university setting.
Why Northampton?
For me, Northampton felt like the perfect place to study.
Not only does the modern campus feel safe with 24/7 campus security, it is also somewhere I would be supported in every aspect of my life.
Professionally, my tutors would do anything they could to help me succeed and get the most out of the course, while also assisting in my personal and professional growth. The Counselling and Mental Health and other Student Services teams would also be there if I ever needed them.
My experience so far
Since starting just over a month ago, I have began exploring the fundamentals of voice and movement – key areas that underpin any actor’s training.
One of the best things about these modules is that they are extremely practical so we understand how various techniques feel in our bodies.
Other more theory-based sessions in theatre history have also given me a wider understanding of theatre around the world and through time – something that will enrich my studies and my career.

Benefits for career progression
As the course reflects changes in the industry, students are prepared for careers in theatre, film, televison and digital media by utlising modern technology and ideas.
Focusing on employability means students can adapt and prepare for a changing industry.
This course also has direct links to the Royal and Derngate theatres, giving students key contacts in the industry, and each student receives a student equity card, an essential tool for the actor.
Settling in
Coming to university felt like a big step, however the welcoming environment made moving away from home much easier. Not only is this true for the wider university, it is also true for my course specifically. The level of care the tutors have for each student make it feel as if we each have a voice and can share opinions freely, especially in giving and receiving feedback. This approach has made settling into my course feel smooth and nurtured. The course is already starting to feel natural to me and I am so excited to see where it leads me.
