Module choice

All courses are made up of modules – individual units of study on different topics that make up your degree award. Some courses are made up of entirely compulsory modules, while others require you to make a choice about what you would like to study.

Award maps

Your award map shows modules that are available to you and details how many credits are awarded for each module. Some modules will require you to have studied certain modules at a lower level as pre-requisites, this tends to be in your second year and onwards.

On each stage of your award map there is a set of instructions advising which modules you need to complete in order to achieve your award:

  • compulsory modules which must be studied to achieve your award and are the foundation of the subject
  • designated modules that are relevant to your area of study, which you can choose between to tailor your study to your interests

Confirming your module choice

If you need to complete module choices you will be advised on how to complete this process. Before choosing your modules, you should make sure that:

  • you have the right prerequisites or entry qualifications for a module
  • the module is not restricted to a specific degree programme
  • you have not chosen any restricted combinations
  • you’ll have completed the compulsory modules by the time you complete stage one

You can study between 10 and 90 credits each year. You will be expected to complete Stage one of your studies over two or three years.

Changing your studies

If you’re unsure about whether you’ve chosen the right course or module during the first few weeks of the academic year, or you’re thinking about changing your course or module, contact your Personal Tutor (PT) or your current course leader.

If you decide to make a change to your course after you have started, please contact the Student Information Desk or visit them in Learning Hub, Waterside. You will need to complete the relevant form and email/return it to the Student Information Desk.
