What happens at university open days?
Open days for universities give you the opportunity to find out more about a University and see everything that it has to offer. All of our open days are free and include information on the courses available and give a chance to explore the campus. It’s the best way to find out what it’s really like to study with us at the University of Northampton!
At a University of Northampton open day you can:
- Get subject information delivered by our academic staff to give you a real taste of the courses we offer.
- Quiz our current students on every aspect of student life.
- Take a tour of Campus
- Get a feel for our halls of residences
- Speak to advisors and find out about bursaries, scholarships, accommodation and student support.
- Ask your questions about postgraduate and master’s options.
- Chat to the Students’ Union and meet representatives from our clubs and societies.
The specific timings for our open days may be subject to change, but a typical schedule involves:
- Course information – subject sessions and subject drop ins for undergraduate and masters
- Talks on – welcome to UON, accommodation, personal statement advice, parents and carers, students union, integrated foundation year (IFY), student life at UON and financial guidance
- Tours of both the campus and the town of Northampton
- Drop in sessions where you can meet our support teams, get personal statement support, and receive parents and carers guidance
We recommned viewing a sample schedule to help plan your day.
Open day FAQs
We strongly recommend that our open day places are booked in advance, so make sure you secure a place as soon as possible.
Making an open day booking in good time will ensure that you get all the information you need in advance to get the most out of your visit.
If you can’t make it on a certain open day, there may be other events available and our campus tours run throughout the year. Check out our campus tours page for more information.
When making such an important decision, it can be very helpful to have a second opinion from someone you trust. That’s why you are very welcome to bring guests along to a UON open day.
Free parking is available on UON open days in car park 4 at Waterside Campus. Please use the following postcode NN4 8RR to find us.
If you plan to travel by train, please plan your journey in advance. When you arrive in Northampton, we’ve got you covered from the train station to campus. The open day bus stops at the station and our Student Ambassador (wearing a blue uniform) will be on hand to point you in the right direction.

As your well-being and accessibility are our priority, we also offer a quiet tour option for those who need it. Please speak to a member of the Welcome Team when you arrive at registration.
Those looking to study master’s/ postgraduate courses with us are welcome to attend UON open days for a master’s drop-in. We also host master’s specific events. To find out more, visit our master’s events page to see our upcoming master’s events.
If you have an enquiry for a course that won’t be at the open day, the best option is to contact the course team directly via the details on the relevant course page. We also periodically run webinars for our courses so check out our Events Listings for what is coming up.
When it comes to what to wear to a uni open day, there are no set rules but if you plan to take a campus tour, comfortable footwear is recommended.
Our virtual tour is a great way to see the campus in advance of an open day. When you arrive for an open day, you will first head to the Creative Hub to let us know you are here so make sure you check out this location when you are browsing the campus online.
If you are looking to avoid the crowds then we would recommend arriving after 10.30am and attending some of our lunchtime and afternoon sessions. The full schedule will be on our website at least a couple of weeks before each of our events. The Events Team are always happy to help you plan your day. Please do drop them an email if you want to chat further about this.
We recommend checking out our Stepping into University pages. These will guide you though the steps to take to starting university as well as help prepare you for higher education.
We recommend preparing a list of questions you might want to ask during the open day. Depending on what you want to get out of your open day, you will have different questions to ask. Take a look at some suggestions below:
You can ask us questions on anything you think is relevant on the open day. From course information to campus facilities and accommodation. We will try and answer any important questions you wish to find out information about.
Check out our Living Room Lectures where you will be able to gain an insight into life at the University of Northampton and get all your questions answered whilst staying at home. Please check our event listings for more information.
Or come and join us for a campus tour.
If you have any questions you can email events@northampton.ac.uk or you can talk to us directly on 01604 892 568.
