Graduations November 2022

Date 24.11.2022

There were smiles and photos all round last week as more than 2,000 former students returned to Waterside to officially become graduates.

There were 11 ceremonies held across four days at the Royal & Derngate, and the week in figures includes:

  • 2215 students graduated
  • Over 6600 guests attended
  • Over 45 members of staff helped at the ceremonies
  • Over 230 members of academic staff attended as part of the academic processions.
  • 11 celebratory ‘Mexican Waves’!

Some graduates also received awards* for exceptional educational achievement during their time at UON, such as Samuel Day (Winner of the Martin Lawrence Acting Award for Best Actor and BA Acting peer Toni Kapetanovic (Winner of the Martin Lawrence Acting Award for Best Actress; both in main photo with Vice Chancellor Anne-Marie Kilday, back centre).

Free group photography was offered in the Town Hall for less formal photos with families and friends. The gallery can be found here (password is GRAD); downloadable images only are free, with a cost for print photos.

As well as the usual group photos for informal shots, face painting and games, new additions this year included a dedicated children’s craft area to keep the little ones entertained.

Here, guests’ children could take part in a fun ‘mortar board’ making activity – staff even created a mini graduation ceremony – and a colouring competition. Prizes, which include pens, crayons and notebooks and certificates are being sent to the winners this week.

Alex Hardwick, Assessments, Ceremonies and Examinations Manager, says: “There’s nothing quite like the buzz of graduation ceremonies as we say what might be a final farewell to our students after months or years of hard work. I’d like to say congratulations to all of them, from myself and the team, and a huge thank you to everyone who helped make their ceremonies such a success.”
