The purpose of this module is to prepare students for leadership roles, with knowledge and skills required for motivating self and others to be creative, innovative and effective in influencing change and enhancing professional practice in public health.

What You'll Learn


The indicative content explores leadership theories, motivation, creativity and innovation in self, others and their organisations in relation to group and team dynamics, considering how to overcome barriers to promote a positive culture and achieve effective change in public health practice.

  • Understanding leadership qualities and key theories.
  • Leadership styles – leadership vs management.
  • Reflection and it’s importance in leadership.
    Influencing and motivation people in public health settings and followership.
  • Factors that influence individual, team and organisational dynamics.
    Organisational dynamics in health and leading change

In relation to the specialised area of study, students will, with minimal / no guidance be able to:

  1. Analyse and interpret factors contributing to individual, team and organisational dynamics, considering the impact for achieving successful change within public health.
  2. Critically appraise and apply theoretical approaches and models of leadership and management of people, utilising appropriate delegation, negotiation and influencing skills to overcome barriers to change.
  3. Contextualise and critically evaluate how variations in approach to organisational structure impact public health delivery.
  4. Evaluate and synthesise appropriate strategies and interventions for motivating and leading people to be creative and innovative in delivering the priorities of public health.
  5. Critically reflect on own leadership style for creating a positive culture to work collaboratively to improve public health outcomes.
