Finding my passion
The perfect start is explaining how exactly I even got here, what exactly was it about nursing that sealed the deal for me? Conveniently for me, that question is easy! I fell in love with the idea of healthcare an exceedingly long time ago, bouncing from wanting to be a doctor, to a paramedic, to finally a nurse; and I have not looked back since. What inspired me was the idea of spending everyday making a significant difference. Of course it is quite a common dream to want to have an influence in the world. For me that was no different, and nursing is perfect because it is a difference I could see and that was undebatable in every way.
Deciding University was for me!
To me, 3 years of studying to achieve that dream was an easy decision, and here I am! I will admit I was naive when I chose this course, I didn’t truly perceive the difficulties; but I haven’t had a single regret and every lecture or placement shift or new experience makes me feel so lucky to know that I found the course that ended up being truly perfect for my passion and my character.
Why did I pick UON?
When I was sixteen, university seemed to be on everyone’s minds! I was convinced that I would move away from Northampton and meet all sorts of new people. I had this stubborn idea that I would find myself by having a change of scenery by moving away. As the UCAS deadline grew closer, the idea of being away from home and not being familiar with my surroundings began to worry me. So I decided I wanted to stay at home and attend my local university, the university of Northampton.

Why Adult Nursing at UON?
I did some research into the variety of nursing courses available at UON, and fell in love with the Adult Nursing course. My course journey so far has been nothing short of incredible. There have been challenging parts of the course such as coping with the loss of patients you help when working in the industry. It’s a common misconception that those in healthcare become desensitised to such experiences but for me, that has never been the case. Despite this, I wouldn’t trade this career path for anything. I feel so fortunate to be part of a field where compassion truly matters and I can go home every day and feel fulfilled and proud.
The benefits of the course
Alongside lectures, we complete six weeks or more of placements in hospitals, nursing homes, and community clinics – real-world experiences that bring the theory to life! Our lectures cover everything from legislation and evidence-based care to anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. My favourite part has to be anatomy and physiology; I’ve always been fascinated by how complex the human body is and how much it does every single minute without us even realising.
This course sets us up perfectly for a career as a registered Adult Nurse, whether in the NHS, private sector, or a specialist role.
Plus, every placement gives us the chance to build connections within the health service, so when we finally earn our pin and degree, we’re ready to dive straight into the world of nursing!
Even though I decided to stay at home, embracing my introverted nature has allowed me to focus on what genuinely fulfils me like my music, my reading, and my art. And honestly, I don’t feel like I’ve missed out at all. Instead, I’ve gained something far more valuable: a deep sense of purpose and gratitude for the journey I’m on.
