Why I chose BSc Marketing at UON

13.01.2026In this blog, Luke discusses why he chose to study Marketing, his experience so far at UON, and the career progression on this course.
Why study Marketing?
I never thought I would go into business. For most of my life I thought I’d end up in paramedics, audiology, or medicine in general. Over the years I’ve picked up First Aid certificates and have researched the human body since I was a child. But over the last five years, I took Business in both GCSE and A-level which gave me the best grades out of all my subjects. I also realised how much I enjoy psychology, research and analysing data – partly thanks to my ADHD.
Once I properly looked into Marketing, it just clicked. It brings together everything I’m interested in,
and the working hours are far better than medicine, which will allow me to be the kind of parent and partner I want to be.
Why study at the University of Northampton?
I hadn’t even heard of Northampton when I was applying to universities originally. However, after meeting my girlfriend I was introduced to the Northampton area. When I then looked into the course at UON, it was miles ahead of the others I’d applied for. The lecturers are genuinely passionate and highly qualified in their subjects, and the smaller class sizes suit me the best.
Having lecturers who know your name and actually want you to do well makes a massive difference.

My experience so far
The course so far has been extremely interesting. I’ve spent more time studying in my free time than I ever did at GCSE or A-level because I genuinely enjoy the course and learning different aspects about it. The lecturers have been consistently supportive and always willing to help.
Career progression:
Studying Marketing at Northampton can lead to brilliant employment opportunities, due to being accredited by CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) and DMI (Digital Marketing Institute). These certifications significantly boost your career options compared to a lot of other courses in marketing.
How I’m settling in:
These past few months have genuinely been some of the best of my life. Studying something I actually enjoy, whilst being surrounded by great people, has been such an amazing change – and I’m excited to see how everything develops over the next few years.
