Date 18 May 2026

University can be daunting, says Cadence, who explores the variety of support offered by UON to students throughout their studies in this blog.

Types of support at UON

UON students have access to a wide variety of support systems throughout their time here. One of these is your Personal Academic Tutor who is allocated to you at the start of the year and is on hand to help point you in the right direction with any issues you may have, ranging from settling in to subject specific questions and can be contacted at any time. The Library Team are another team available to students and can advise on referencing, finding specific texts and other skills. The Mental Health Team are also here to offer free and confidential support to any student who feels they need support. The support this team offers includes counselling, drop- in sessions and sessions with mental health advisers.

Being supported on your course

Every course at UON has its own way of supporting students whether this is through placements or other unique opportunities. Placement years can be beneficial as they allow you to gain experience in your industry and network within it. They also give you the opportunity to apply prior learning to genuine situations and can help in deciding if this career is for you. No matter your course, there will be an opportunity to support you in your future.

Support at the start of your studies

At the start of your journey here (if eligible), you will be able to choose from one of three perks which are designed to support you. These are:

  • Halls of Residence discount (applied to spring and summer rent instalments),
  • food credit (which can be used at all food outlets on campus),
  • or a free laptop (which is yours to keep if you choose it).

The university also provides full access to Office365, LinkedIn Learning and Adobe Creative Cloud to all students so that you have all the resources you may need to enhance your learning at your fingertips.

My experience

Since starting, I have found the support at UON amazing. I have personally benefitted from the support of the Mental Health Team as they have been there to settle any worries I may have, especially regarding exam stress. Having a Personal Tutor has also been great as it means I have a point of contact for any questions I may have whether they are course related or not. I chose the food credit as my perk which has helped me save money on my weekly food shop. I genuinely believe the support offered at UON is second to none.
