Discovering UON
Since embarking my study journey at the University of Northampton (UON), it has been a transformative experience. At the beginning, I was thinking it would be only lectures, assessments, and a new environment with a different culture. However, UON offers support systems and opportunities which make it genuinely easier to adapt, especially for international students like me, which makes it more welcoming.
Accessible support systems
There’s a student information desk located in the Learning Hub, which is easily accessible. Students can be assisted if they have any issues, whether it be regarding their studies, finances, wellbeing, IT, and more.
I recently went there to ask about an IT issue on my laptop and the staff member kindly directed me to the right team. The IT staff helped me by looking at the problem, which was running the printer software on my laptop, and fixing it. They were patient and friendly when they helped me. They also made sure everything worked fine before I left.
Free English workshops
Outside of classes, UON offer learning support for those who need it. I joined the English workshop to keep improving my English, although I had already passed my test before starting at UON. Other learning support on campus consists of drop-in sessions and appointments, where students can get help in specific areas, such as academic writing.

Strategic location of campus to the town centre
The campus location is really convenient, and only takes 10-15 minutes to get to the town centre. I’m living in St. John’s off-campus accommodation, which sits between campus and town centre. It’s easy to reach anywhere that makes my daily life simple, whether I’m heading to my classes for studying or going to the town centre to meet friends.
Inclusive community
There are students from diverse backgrounds, ranging from local and international backgrounds. UON offers a wide variety of cultural and seasonal events including Christmas, Lunar New Year, Holi etc. Most include free meals, where students of all backgrounds, can celebrate together.
So, for me, it creates a strong sense of belonging on campus.
Getting involved in student activity
When I was on enrolment day, I came to the Student Ambassador booth and asked how to apply. The ambassador explained the process clearly, and I got the email to join the interview process, including group task, a short interview, and fun games. I can support the University at events such as Open Days, and get paid too.
