Starting University
Starting university is a huge change, and many people don’t know what to expect until they are thrown in at the deep end. Here is some advice on what I wish I had known during my first year of university.
You don’t need to have it all figured out
Going to university is a big step up from school, and you’re not necessarily going to know exactly what you want to do with your life. There is a lot of pressure put on us to know what we want to do in the future, however, everyone around you is in the same boat, and it’s okay to explore different interests whether that be in your studies or socially.
The importance of budgeting
In university, money can easily slip away, especially when you are experiencing new things such as doing a food shop or going out clubbing with friends. Ensuring that you set budgets for yourself is really important to make sure that you are looking after your money and spending it wisely.

Say yes to everything
It can be daunting starting university, especially if you are someone that has moved away from home and is in a completely different town or city.
Saying yes to different opportunities is one of the best ways to make new friends and put yourself out there.
There are so many exciting new opportunities when starting university, and although it might be scary at first, you will soon find your feet and become more confident and comfortable.
You’re not alone
It can feel lonely at times, and that’s okay, especially for someone who has moved away from home to live in halls. It’s okay and normal to feel homesick sometimes, especially in the beginning, and you and your peers are all in the same boat. If you are struggling, there are facilities on site that can help you deal with these feelings and support you. Facilities and teams on campus such as the Student Support Services that can help you deal with these feelings and support you.
University is a rollercoaster and your first year is so important to build strong connections with people and settle into your new home, and at the end it will all be worth it and allow you to have an amazing university experience.
