Studying Fashion Marketing at UON
Starting university as a first-generation student at the University of Northampton was both exciting and daunting. I didn’t have anyone in my family who could guide me through what to expect, so stepping into the world of fashion marketing and promotion felt like uncharted territory. I also didn’t come straight from school. I spent six years working in the health and social care industry before deciding to change my career path. This experience taught me that life isn’t linear and it’s okay to change your mind about the direction you’re going. Looking back, making this change has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.
Fashion isn’t just about what you wear. It’s the story it tells, the brand behind it, and the culture it reflects. This course has taught me to spot trends, understand audiences and communicate ideas in a way that truly connects.
The practical experience has been invaluable. I have worked on many fashion photography projects and developed collaboration campaigns that were relevant to my personal brand. Some of the highlights include creating concept campaigns for Harvey Nichols, Benefit Cosmetics and Coco & Eve, these allowed me to experiment with creative ideas while learning how to connect with different audiences.
I have a deep interest in the promotional side of fashion marketing, including photography, brand storytelling and social media strategies. These areas allow me to explore how to present a brand in an authentic way while refining my skills in creating content that resonates with audiences across different platforms.
For me, fashion is art and art is fashion, and this course has given me the tools to express that through creative campaigns and visual storytelling.
Group work has been especially important because it gives you a real taste of the dynamics in the working world. Collaborating with others on campaigns teaches you how to communicate ideas, manage different perspectives, and work effectively as a team, skills that are just as crucial as creativity in the fashion industry.
Another unforgettable part of this course has been the trips to Barcelona and Paris, where I had the chance to see real couture heritage and fashion collections up close. Experiencing these iconic fashion cities first-hand gave me insights and inspiration that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to see again for many years, and it really brought fashion history to life in a way that informs my own creative work today.
The support I have received from my tutor has been phenomenal. Whether it was guidance on assignments, advice on professional development, or support with mental health, they truly listen and treat you as an individual.
Looking back, I can see how much I have grown, not just academically but professionally. I feel equipped with the skills, confidence and industry insight to step into the fashion world as a communicator who can contribute meaningfully, adapt to trends and bring fresh perspectives to campaigns and projects.
For anyone thinking about fashion marketing and promotion at the University of Northampton, this course doesn’t just teach you about fashion – it helps you find your voice, develop your skills and get ready for the real world. My one piece of advice would be to set up a LinkedIn profile as soon as possible; it’s such a useful way to start building your professional network from day one!
