It’s Never Too Late to Go to University
Date 26 January 2026
26.01.2026From never skipping a class to pausing my education for two years, I started university later than usual, but I am proud of my journey.
It’s Never Too Late to Go to University
“Delays are blessings in disguise.” I had heard this countless times but never truly understood it, until I faced a major delay in my own life.
A few years ago, I had an accident and broke my right elbow. I went through two surgeries. It wasn’t just my elbow that was broken, my dreams felt broken too. Mentally, it was even harder than physically, as I realised I couldn’t continue my daily activities, including studying. During those two years, I watched my peers graduate and start careers while I struggled to even hold a pen.
Mustering Up the Courage and UON’s Role
Eventually, I decided to continue my education. With fragile and shaky steps, I began searching for universities in the UK. I feared further delays and rejection, and I worried the universities might question my gap and turn me away. But when I applied to the University of Northampton, all my doubts were proven wrong, they showed that they value a student’s potential far more than their age. The university responded quickly and clearly, making the application process smooth and reassuring.

Being a Mature Student in the Classroom
Being a mature student brought its own worries. On my first day, I felt self-conscious about being older than most classmates. Yet, the faculty and university environment immediately made me feel welcome and supported. I realised that when you pursue something despite obstacles, it builds discipline and helps you understand the true value of education. That experience also taught me that challenges push you to grow and reminded me that it’s never too late to pursue your goals.
Regret is Heavier than Courage!
I realised learning has no age limit. There’s no rule that says you must graduate by a certain age. Everyone moves at their own pace, and it’s far better to move forward despite setbacks than to stay stagnant with regret. That delay, and the support from UON, gave me clarity and determination: the moment you decide, “I will complete my degree, no matter what,” nothing can stop you.
