Northampton’s history and culture

Northampton is a town with a story to tell. From heritage in shoemaking to its role in English History, the town provides a backdrop that inspires students every day. At UON, this history is not just preserved in books and museums, it’s actively woven into the creative courses that shape future designers, artists and storytellers.

Shoemaking Legacy

Take Northampton’s shoemaking legacy. Once known as the centre of British footwear, the town’s craftmanship and innovation continue to influence fashion and design students. Courses draw from this tradition, giving students the chance to understand materials, sustainability and the connection of past and modern techniques. UON students are encouraged to create work that is both relevant and rooted in history.

Historical Architecture and Landmarks

The town’s historical architectural and cultural landmarks also inspire creative thinking. From medieval churches and industrial warehouses, Northampton offers countless spaces that fuel imagination. Art and Photography students often find themselves using the town hall as both a subject and stage, capturing the changing character and exploring how places shape identity.

This deep connection to history also sparks collaboration. Local museums, heritage sites and cultural organisations often work with UON students, providing inspiration, real-world projects that build portfolios and confidence. Whether it’s assisting in curating exhibitions, designing promotional materials or reimagining craft, students are able to see their work have a meaningful impact on the community.

Benefits of studying in a historic town

For those studying creative writing, media or film, Northampton offers endless stories. Historic Battles, legends and lives and ordinary townspeople all provide a volume of inspiration. Many students use these narratives to fuel projects, blending history with contemporary themes where their work becomes more engaging.

Studying at UON means joining a tradition of creativity that looks both backward and forward. Northampton’s history is a constant reminder that innovation does not happen in isolation. It is built on what came before. By drawing on this heritage, students are encouraged to create work that is distinctive, thoughtful, and connected to the world around them.
