Networking in academia

Harmonious relationships, effective communication, and mutual understanding sounds like the perfect rapport a student can build with a lecturer throughout their course.

Show your passion for your course

Show your interest and express passion for a subject – lecturers are willing to give you as much knowledge as they can, so showing your genuine interest, active participation in discussions, workshops, willingness to learn, ask, or clarify will only help you to build rapport with lectures. Therefore, do not be afraid of speaking to them if you are unsure about things, email them to get some extra tasks for practice etc as it only enhances your student portrait in the eyes of a lecturer.

Resilience, goal-orientation, dedication – these are key traits lecturers appreciate and encourage students to have.

What if you don’t enjoy the lecturer’s module?

On the other hand, what can you do if a subject is not among your favourites, but you still want to build a rapport with a lecturer? It is not just academic excellence that matters. Being a decent person is important too. Be polite, be on time for your lectures, show preparation with coursework, wider reading, or attempt to be engaged during discussions in the class.

What I love about UON.

The majority of my Law lecturers at UON have huge professional practical experience, or are still practicing barristers, accountants, etc. Do not hesitate to contact them as they are often willing to help you with networking, work experience opportunities or just practical advice which is important for every aspiring professional.

Overall, show your interest, ambitions, and willingness to learn and rapport with lecturers will be guaranteed.

There are various ways to build rapport with lecturers, sometimes it can be as simple as asking them for support with your studies.
