Career Confidence: Why the Employment Promise Matters

Date 13 May 2026

Hazel shares how the employment promise can help ease students’ minds with getting a job after graduation.

Statistics will often be displayed online showing how few graduates end up getting a job within their chosen field. This, like many others, in the past has always caused a little bit of a worry as I’ve always known what I want to do and that university was the best path to get there. So, I found myself feeling a lot more relieved when I found out that the University of Northampton has The Employment Promise, which ended up becoming an important factor in deciding to study here.

What is The Employment Promise?

The Employment Promise consists of two things that the university provides, a career development consultant and a paid internship. The career development consultant works with you after graduation to assist in getting you into employment or further study. If they are unable to help you get a job in your field after 6 months of working with them, the university will either provide a short paid internship to help further with employability.

How to be eligible for The Employment Promise?

There are some eligibility requirements to the Employment Promise so that the resources can be used on the students that need it most. In order to use this, you must first get a 2:2, which is achievable for the majority of students, and one of two awards, either the employability plus certificate or the changemaker certificate. Both of these can be awarded during your studies and you can find out about by contacting staff within the university.

Why is it important to me?

In my personal experience, The Employment Promise gives me peace of mind as the game development industry is a very competitive industry to get into. By having the support from the career consultants when I leave university, I can receive the support to ensure that I have a better chance of getting into a position that I want.
