What You'll Learn

The BSc Professional Health Studies (Top Up) is designed for experienced health and social care practitioners who want to deepen their expertise and progress in their careers with greater influence and impact. It offers the opportunity to build advanced knowledge for modern professional practice, supporting you to engage critically with the complex realities of contemporary health and care settings.

Throughout the course, you will develop the ability to review and evaluate current professional practices, identifying risks that affect quality, safety, and service delivery. You will explore the social, organisational, ethical, and clinical factors that shape decision-making, and examine how health and social care systems manage change to ensure continuous improvement.

Alongside this, you will strengthen high-level academic and research skills that enable you to locate, organise, and critically appraise professional literature. You will learn how to evaluate evidence-based research and apply it to the development of safer, more effective practice, while enhancing your academic writing, critical thinking, and reflective approach to professional development.

A key focus of the programme is supporting you to strengthen your ethical, legal, and professional judgement. You will apply relevant frameworks to real-world challenges, assess uncertainty using contemporary evidence and professional standards, and build confidence in navigating complex practice environments.

You will also refine your professional communication skills, developing the ability to explain complex ideas clearly through appropriate professional language. The course supports you to communicate decision-making processes effectively, both in writing and through digital presentation, preparing you for leadership roles within evolving service contexts.

As a reflective and future-focused practitioner, you will be encouraged to critically evaluate your own development, identify areas for growth, and apply leadership and management strategies to influence positive change in your workplace. You will also build digital confidence through the use of technology to present and share information professionally.

By the end of the course, you will have developed the insight, capability, and confidence to influence practice, improve quality, and contribute meaningfully to the future of health and social care.

How you are assessed reflects the realities of professional practice. Assessments are designed to help you apply your learning directly to workplace challenges while demonstrating critical thinking, reflection, and effective communication. You may complete a reflective account or journal, enabling you to connect theory with practice and support your ongoing professional development. You will also undertake a critical review of literature, strengthening your research literacy and ability to make evidence-informed recommendations. In addition, a recorded presentation will allow you to demonstrate digital communication skills, leadership understanding, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly.

Together, these assessments ensure that your learning is applied in meaningful and practical ways, supporting your development as a reflective, ethical, and forward-thinking practitioner.
