With Level 3 exam results day approaching for students across the country, one student at the University of Northampton has reflected on her experience of the “personal and supportive” Clearing hotline.
Magda Topolska is in her second year studying Popular Music, but before she hit ‘accept’ on her initial degree choice of Music Production, she was tempted by other degree offerings at UON.
Magda explains: “At first I planned to study Music Production, but at the last moment I realised I wanted to pursue a degree that was more aligned with my passion for music, and that’s when I came across the Popular Music* course at UON.
“I felt that this course suited my interests more and gave me more freedom to grow artistically as a performer. The course also included elements of music production, such as working with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and studio sessions, so I’d get the best of both worlds!”
After discovering a new direction for her degree studies, Magda reached out to the University’s Clearing hotline: “The process was surprisingly smooth and supportive. I had a video call with the head of the course, which made a huge difference.
“It didn’t feel intimidating at all, it was more like a genuine conversation about my goals, experience, and what the course could offer. It really helped me feel confident that I was making the right choice.”
Now, Magda is enjoying every moment of her studies, saying: “I’ve loved collaborating with other students on creative projects – it’s been really inspiring and has pushed me to grow as an artist.
“A standout has also been working closely with lecturers who are also active musicians. Their real-world experience brings so much value to the course.”

Reflecting on how far she has come since her own experience of Clearing, Magda says: “I wish I’d known how personal and supportive the process would be. I imagined something rushed or impersonal, but in reality, it felt like a proper introduction to the course and the university, which helped me feel welcome from the very beginning.
“My advice to those going through Clearing would be – don’t let the word “Clearing” put you off! It’s just another way to find the right path. Be open-minded, do your research, and ask questions.
“Most importantly, remember that you’re not “late” – you’re simply choosing what’s best for you, in your own time.”
