Course content

This course aims to develop the technical, communication and management skills required by technician engineers in today's engineering industry. It integrates mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering with design, manufacture and business studies.

The HNC provides a gateway for direct entry to the HND in Engineering run at The University of Northampton and at Tresham. Successful students may also progress from the HND onto the BSc Engineering (top-up) run at The University of Northampton and ultimately the MSc Engineering.

Throughout the course, particular emphasis is laid on practical applications. Students are required through their coursework to relate theory to practice at their place of work, which would normally be expected to be within a technical department. In particular, all students are encouraged to choose a problem for their project which directly relates to their employer's business. This is complemented by the use of specialist computer software so that students gain wide hands-on experience of modern computer aided engineering.

Stage one

At stage one students undertake a range of modules covering electrical and mechanical principles, analytical methods and engineering design.

Stage two

In stage two, engineering fundamentals are further developed by a group of modules covering advanced engineering principles, materials and industrial practice. Students also undertake a project.
