Meet Roxanne, an MA Education Studies student whose experience as a Career Coach with Student Futures helped her discover a career she was passionate about. Supporting fellow students with CVs, job searching and interview preparation, Roxanne particularly enjoyed helping students build their confidence and take steps towards their goals. Through the role, she developed her own skills, experience and confidence while gaining valuable insight into careers guidance and employability. Her experience has helped shape her own career ambitions, leading to her securing a role as a Careers Leader at a college in Leicester from August 2026.

Can you tell us about your role as a Career Coach and what a typical day looked like?

During my time as a careers coach no day quite looked the same! As it was completely down to catering to each of the students wants and needs, whether it was assisting with Interview techniques, CV advice or Job Searching.

What did you enjoy most about working with students at the University of Northampton?

I most enjoyed the feeling you got when you were able to successfully help a student as from that moment you could see their confidence flourish and you knew they would hit their goal.

What were the most common challenges students came to you with, and how did you help them overcome them?

The most common challenges I saw were their CV problems and their confidence in applying for jobs. The approach which I would take would be stripping it back to basics and asking the student what are you interested in? What sort of activities do you enjoy? Why did you pick the course?  Doing this would help to break the whole application into a similar process.

What’s the one piece of advice you think every student should hear when it comes to their career or employability?

To never be worried if you are not 100% sure in what you want to do for the rest of your life! Very few do!

What would you say to a student who’s unsure whether they should drop in to see a Career Coach?

I was always brought up with the phrase you never knew until you try! So I’d always recommend coming to see us as you never know what you can learn!

What’s been your proudest moment as a Career Coach?

My proudest moment is hard to say as I got into the job wanting to make a positive impact on fellow student’s lives! Which I have done successfully so I think it’s difficult to just pick one!

How do you feel you developed your own skills, experience and confidence whilst in this role, and what did this enable you to go on to do yourself?

I have developed my skills, experience, and confidence by finding something I would like to do as a career after my studies here! As the skills learnt here and the love for the job has enabled me to get the Careers Leader in a College in Leicester from August 2026! Which without the job here would’ve been impossible!
