I decided to study at the University of Northampton because I loved how they promoted their courses. When I attended open days, I had an amazing time talking to the tutors of my preferred courses and learning about the variety of subjects that I would study under their guidance. The support they offered if I were to join the course contradicted my beliefs about a university degree being hard to study and difficult to complete – going to open evenings really gave me the confidence and reassurance I needed to go to university.

When I started my course, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted as a career – all I knew was that I wanted to continue pursuing science. I chose my degree because it had a variety of modules that covered different fields of science, and I felt it would give me a better idea of what I would like to do when I graduate. Currently, I’m leaning towards environmental sciences, more specifically conservational biology or marine biology/conservation.

I learn something new every day through my lectures, which will help me to hone the skills I already have, as well as to develop new skills that will benefit me when I graduate. The tutors are very supportive and answer any questions asked.

Currently, the skills I’m developing of teamwork, communication, time-management, scientific writing, and working with technology and software, are all points of interest within my course. These are the skills I believe will be most beneficial to me in the future, especially when working in science. I’ve also developed skills in the laboratory.

The advice I’d give to undergraduates interested in this career path would be that personal statements are a good entry path into any course, as they demonstrate your enthusiasm to develop your knowledge and skills in your preferred subject area.

My UON experience so far has been welcoming, friendly and exciting.
