Length of course: One year.

I chose to study at the University of Northampton because the online courses that were offered aligned with my educational and career goals, particularly in my chosen field of children and family services. Also, the University’s commitment to providing a high-quality hands-on online learning experience, with its student-focused approach to education, drew my attention to pursuing my studies here.

My career goal is to become a Child Psychologist. I believe my studies at the University of Northampton will significantly enhance both my career prospects and my personal development.

By gaining a solid academic foundation in children and family services, I’ll develop the knowledge and practical skills necessary to effectively support and advocate for families in need. The hands-on learning approach and online coursework will allow me to apply theory to real-world situations, which I’d previously been lacking – this will be invaluable in my future roles.

Furthermore, the emphasis on student-centred learning and the opportunity to engage with professionals in the field will enable me to build a strong network and understand the latest industry practices. This will increase my confidence and competence, both of which are essential for pursuing a career in Child Psychology,

On a personal level, this programme will help me grow my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that will be vital not only in my professional life, but also in my everyday interactions and responsibilities. I’m confident that through studying this course, I’ll be equipped with the ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families.

Key areas of learning that I anticipate being particularly useful include:

  • Computer skills – completing my studies entirely online has significantly boosted my confidence in using technology. It’s allowed me to enhance my computer skills, from navigating digital platforms to using various online tools, which has greatly improved my overall proficiency and comfort with technology
  • Communication and interpersonal skills – I’ve developed strong communication skills, both verbal and written, which are essential for working effectively with children, families, and multidisciplinary teams. This will enable me to build trust and understanding with both clients and colleagues
  • Knowledge of child development and family dynamics – the in-depth understanding I’ve gained within these areas will be crucial when assessing needs, providing support, and advocating for children and families in various settings
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking – my degree has equipped me with the ability to analyse complex situations, consider different perspectives, and develop practical solutions. This is vital when working with families facing challenging circumstances and will enable me to approach each case with empathy and a clear, thoughtful plan of action
  • Ethical and legal awareness – a strong grounding in ethical considerations and legal frameworks related to child protection and family services will guide my practice and ensure that I work within professional boundaries, safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of children and families, especially when conducting research with them
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity – the emphasis on diversity and inclusion within my studies has fostered a deep understanding of cultural competence, which will allow me to work effectively with families from diverse backgrounds and navigate the complexities of social and cultural differences.

When I first started this course I remember panicking, thinking how on earth could they expect me to do everything online? Also, being an EAL (English as an Additional Language) student, I didn’t think I could pull it off, but the University’s reputation for offering practical and hands-on learning experience helped to increase my confidence and competence.

Additionally, the University’s emphasis on sustainability and social impact is something I value deeply and I’m excited to be part of a university that not only provides academic excellence but also promotes positive change within and outside the community.

The diverse services that are provided by the University of Northampton have allowed me to thrive both academically and personally. I fully recommend it as the best place to study for those who value flexibility in their educational journey, whilst advancing towards higher education.
