Going to university wasn’t something I’d thought about doing, but 3D art is my passion. One day I asked someone for advice on how to improve my skills and they told me to apply for the Games Art course at the University of Northampton.

My ultimate career goal is to become a 3D character artist. Studying this course will help me to achieve this as it’s improving both my work and my skills, which will enable me to be ready for a job within the industry. In particular, the skills I feel will be most useful in my future career are how to work in a professional way and how to take feedback from my work.

The Games Art course offers a work placement year, which I’m currently completing at Double Eleven as a 3D Games Artist. My role is to work on texturing game assets, as well as fixing any bugs. This is giving me the opportunity to gain professional skills, work on my portfolio and make contacts within the industry. It’s also developing my experience of time management and working as part of a team.

My tip on getting the most benefit from your placement is to show that you have a passion for what you do and that you’re willing to learn. Also, learn how to take feedback – people are trying to help you improve your work, not put you down.

If I could give one piece of advice to undergraduates interested in this career path it would be to make sure you have a passion for what you’re doing, as people will see that, and it will help you get a job when you graduate.

Studying this course at UON has helped put me on the right path.
