I chose to study at the University of Northampton because I’ve always wanted to become a solicitor and was determined to take the most direct and focused route toward that goal. The University of Northampton stood out by offering a rare two-year fast-track course, allowing me to complete my studies in a shorter timeframe without compromising the quality of education. This aligned perfectly with my ambition, motivation, and commitment to progressing efficiently into the legal profession.
The aspect of the course I enjoyed the most was learning from lecturers who were true specialists in their fields and brought a real depth of knowledge and practical insight to their teaching. Their experience in law made the content engaging and relevant, as they were able to connect theory to real-world practice. As a first-generation university student, my lecturers, particularly those who had built careers in the legal profession, were some of the only people I knew within the legal sector – seeing their journeys and learning directly from them was incredibly inspiring and further motivated me toward my goal.
Whilst at university, I engaged in regular extra-curricular activities, including participating in the Shoosmiths Solicitors Link Scheme, and volunteering at the Citizens Advice Bureau. I also worked alongside a solicitor to help put together housing advice for students as part of my role within the University’s Law Society. These additional activities enhanced my career prospects by giving me practical exposure to the legal profession. They allowed me to develop key skills such as client communication, legal research, drafting, and teamwork, while also strengthening my commercial awareness and understanding of how legal services operate in practice. Most importantly, they gave me hands-on experience of applying legal knowledge to real-life situations, increasing both my confidence and my readiness to pursue a career as a solicitor.
I initially worked at PageGroup as a secretary, gradually progressing through dedication and consistent development. The organisation gave me the opportunity to become a trainee solicitor and Assistant Legal Manager, which enabled me to build practical legal experience alongside my studies. Over time, I continued to develop my expertise and was promoted to Legal Manager. My plan is to continue growing within the legal sector, further strengthening my expertise, and becoming a recognised specialist within my field.
My studies have supported my professional ambitions and personal growth. Academically, the course strengthened my analytical thinking, legal research, problem-solving, and written communication skills – all of which are essential qualities for a solicitor. They also helped me develop strong time management skills, and the ability to work under pressure, particularly through managing deadlines and independent study. These have been essential throughout my career, particularly when preparing legal documents, providing clear, practical advice, and balancing responsibilities to meet professional deadlines.
On a personal level, being a first-generation university student made the experience especially transformative. It built my confidence, resilience, and self-belief, and reinforced my determination to succeed within the legal profession.
I’m currently actively involved in several initiatives outside of my day-to-day role. I contribute to diversity, equality, and inclusion efforts across the business, and I’ve participated in a reverse mentoring scheme, where I mentor members of the Executive Board on how to foster and maintain a more inclusive working environment. I’ve also chaired a shadow board, working alongside the CEO to support strategic growth and provide broader perspectives within the company. In addition, I lead the Unity at Page branch of our inclusion network, which focuses on promoting diversity and creating a safe and supportive space for ethnic minority colleagues.
Outside of the corporate environment, I volunteer annually at primary and secondary school careers events, where I provide students with insight into careers in law to encourage greater access to the profession.
The advice I’d give to undergraduates interested in this career path is to be proactive in seeking practical experience early. Build strong professional relationships and have confidence in your ability to succeed.
For me, the University of Northampton was a great experience, which helped me grow personally and professionally.
