Education MA Welcome Pack

Welcome to MA Education (online and on-campus) – January 2024.

We welcome you to the Masters’ in Education and we look forward to working with all of you over this coming year. Our Masters’ in Education allows you to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of aspects of education of specific interest to you. During the course you will have the opportunity to study the history, sociology and practice of education in different cultures and contexts. This degree is not a teacher training course but rather a chance to study education reflectively and academically in depth. While studying on this course you will complete a thesis, which is a significant piece of original research. Our Masters’ in Education community includes teachers, school leaders and others working in or interested in education. Some of you will have chosen to study for your MA Education on our Waterside Campus in Northampton (face to face). Others of you will be joining 100% online. All international students in the UK on a study visa must join face-to-face. The online option is designed for education professionals looking for the flexibility to study at a distance. Whichever you choose you will be part of a strong and engaged community of academics and professionals. There will chances to reflect, to develop, and also to publish and present the research that you do.

Supporting you before you begin

We will be sending you some readings before the start of your course and asking for your responses. This will begin to engage you in the academic reading and writing that you will need to do for this degree. We will be very interested in your viewpoints. Please watch out for these messages. Intensive teaching begins in the week beginning 5 February. However, on-campus students should arrive in time to attend the introductory sessions on 25 January and 1 February.

Equipment

Students are expected to have a laptop. There is no other equipment needed. You will not be required to buy any books. There are extensive physical and online libraries that you will find fully cater to your needs.

Enhancing skills, building networks and engaging in the wider University community

Attendance at class is compulsory! Therefore it is vital that you live in or near Northampton if you are in the on-campus cohort and that you are able to attend the online sessions if you are joining as an online student. This is an academic course into education. It is not a teacher training course. However, there will be three visits to UK schools. There will also be the opportunity to take part in academic conferences in person or online.
