Welcome to Integrated Foundation Culture & The Creative Industries pathway 2026.

Welcome to the Integrated Foundation Year in Culture and the Creative Industries at the University of Northampton and the beginning of your degree journey. This is an exciting time to begin studying subjects that explore how culture, media, communication and the creative industries continue to shape the world around us.

During your Foundation Year, you will study a range of contemporary topics that combine practical exploration with critical thinking. You will be encouraged to examine culture and the creative industries within current professional and social contexts, while also developing a stronger understanding of creative and cultural theory. Some areas of study will focus on practical and professional skills, while others will help you build confidence in analysis, communication and academic work.

The Foundation Year is designed to prepare you for progression into your chosen degree while helping you develop your creativity, confidence and professionalism. You will also study alongside students from a range of related subject areas, giving you opportunities to exchange ideas, experience different perspectives and become part of a wider creative and cultural community.

  • BA Creative Film, Television and Digital Media Production with Integrated Foundation Year
  • BA English with Integrated Foundation Year
  • BA Hair, Make-up and Prosthetics for Stage & Screen with Integrated Foundation Year
  • BA History with Integrated Foundation Year
  • BA Multimedia Journalism with Integrated Foundation Year
  • BA Multimedia Sports Journalism with Integrated Foundation Year
  • BA Music Production with Integrated Foundation Year
  • BA Popular Music with Integrated Foundation Year

Throughout your studies, you will be supported by experienced tutors and have access to technical resources and the University’s Library through the Learning Hub.

Preparing for your course

When you arrive at the University of Northampton, there’s plenty to get involved with during Welcome Week. However, there are specific sessions taking place as part of your course induction that’ll help you settle in and prepare for teaching to start the following week.

Monday 21 September

Session: Welcome and meet the IFY teaching team, icebreaker and getting to know the cohort

  • Time: 10 – 11am
  • Location: CH208, second floor, Creative Hub, Waterside campus

Session: Campus tour

  • Time: 12 – 1pm
  • Location: CH208, second floor, Creative Hub, Waterside campus

Session: Introduction to the Integrated Foundation Year

  • Time: 2 – 3pm
  • Location: CH208, second floor, Creative Hub, Waterside campus

This session will introduce the structure of the Integrated Foundation Year, including your timetable, contact hours, workload, assessment, expectations, NILE, staff availability and communication. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
