Accounting & Finance MSc Welcome Pack

Welcome to MSc Accounting & Finance.

A very warm welcome to MSc Accounting and Finance programme!

This programme provides an analytical and integrated study of global accounting and finance which combines theoretical and conceptual approaches with an emphasis on its application to range of ethical problem-solving scenarios with comprehensive understanding of appropriate techniques sufficient for advanced accounting and finance research. The optional placement year is designed to enhance students’ employability skills and provide them with the opportunity to apply their learning in the organisation setting.

The MSc Accounting and Finance programme has been designed for three primary reasons. One, to develop students’ knowledge and skills to gain employment in the broad accounting and finance field in the global marketplace. These skills include problem-solving, critically analysing accounting and financial data, and applying theory to a range of global problems in accounting and finance. Two, to provide students with a future-proofed programme containing a range of modules focused on important current and emerging issues and concerns in the accounting and finance field with due cognisance to the wider global business environment in addition to the more traditional modules of such a course. These current and emerging issues include corporate governance, ecological and organisational sustainability, climate finance and reporting, and ethical behaviour in addition to the standard modules in financial reporting, management accounting, corporate finance, and audit. Three, to enable students to choose to undertake a placement year as part of the programme or do a more traditional research-based dissertation. The former would require students to do a work-based project that focuses on applying the knowledge and skills learnt during the course in a work environment, whereas the latter would require students to work independently on a research problem in broad field of accounting and finance. Both these options align with the key goal of improving students’ knowledge and skills to enhance their employability prospects in the fields of accounting and finance.

Some exemptions from professional examinations are available from main professional bodies, including the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), meaning you will have to pass fewer professional body examinations in order to become a Chartered Accountant.

There is also an Industry Placement Option, which enables you to develop your skills and knowledge in a real-world environment, while completing an applied research project.

Welcome and Induction Sessions

We would like to invite you the MSc Accounting & Finance welcome and induction session. This experience will give you the chance to meet other students starting your course, as well as your academic staff. The details are as follows:

    • Date: TBC
    • Venue: Town Hall and Atrium, Creative Hub.

    There will be two sessions during this event;

    Formal

    Students will understand the expectations that the University has, as well as have the chance to meet relevant staff such as the SEAT.

    Informal

    There will also be an ‘informal’ induction which will be more of a social event. Students do not need to sign up as they can just arrive any time. We will have a variety of different game stalls, snacks, and possible photobooth on offer. Again, it would also be another opportunity for students to meet staff, but in a more relaxed environment.

Enhancing skills, building networks and engaging in the wider University community

The programme will organise several events and presentations that helps you enhance your employability skills, and you will receive more information once you’ve enrolled on the course.
