Professional Leather Training

Short Courses

All of our short courses are aimed at increasing both theoretical and practical knowledge using our seminar rooms, tannery and laboratories. The knowledge gained will make positive contributions to your business and future career. They range from 1 week to 3 months’ duration, so there is a course available for everyone.

  • New course: Foundations of Leather Technology

    Looking at each step of the leather making process from preservation to finishing and including skin structure and testing.

    • Level: Pre-degree, introductory level
    • Duration: 13 January – 31 March 2021 (Every Wednesday 2pm – 3.30pm GMT)
    • Location: Online Distance Learning
    • Fees: £500

    In response to both the current climate and industry demand, we have developed an on-line leather training course, consisting of twelve, one and a half hour, weekly lectures . A course ideal for those new to the industry or those working within the leather value chain looking to upskill and increase their leather knowledge and understanding. For just one and a half hours per week this course can support the continuing personal development programme for individuals or employees.

  • Raw to Tanned

    Preservation, soaking, liming, deliming, bating, pickling and tanning.

    • Level: Intermediate
    • Duration: 20 September – 17 December 2021
    • Location: Waterside campus – ICLT (seminar, tannery and laboratory)
    • Fees: £5,000

    This course offers a comprehensive introduction into the science and technology of leather processing from raw to tanned stage by combining both theoretical and practical modes of delivery using our onsite tannery, laboratories and classrooms – an ideal opportunity to develop new starters to the industry! No prior leather knowledge is required.

    Tanned to Finished

    Tanning, retanning, dyeing, fatliquoring, drying and finishing.

    This course compliments the three month raw to tanned and offers a comprehensive introduction into the science and technology of leather processing from tanned to finished stage by combining both theoretical and practical modes of delivery using our onsite tannery, laboratories and classrooms – an ideal opportunity to develop new starters to the industry!     Leather Development (Professional)

    Advanced leather processing, Advanced leather finishing, Quality evaluation & problem solving, Sustainable development within the leather industry, Leather science, Research methods.

    • Fees: £7,800

    If you are already working in the leather industry, this course will help you to further develop your skills. You will be taught by experts in the field, covering a comprehensive overview of leather science and technology. This, along with developing a critical standpoint will increase your personal value and contribution to the commercial sector.   • Advanced Leather Processing

    Leather processing from raw to crust.

    • Level: Advanced
    • Start Date: 18 January 2021
    • Location: Waterside Campus – ICLT (seminar, tannery and laboratory)
    • Fees: £3,000

    This course will give you the opportunity to critically appraise the processes involved in leather manufacture from raw material to crust stage by analysing the complex relationships between tannery processes, available skin and hide types, the types of end product, and problems in the manufacture and quality of leather. Using our onsite tannery and laboratories, this course will enable you to further development your existing knowledge.

  • Hide to High Street

    Leather performance and suitability for end use, market analysis and design.

    • Level: Advanced
    • Start Date: 14 June 2021
    • Location: Waterside Campus – ICLT (seminar, tannery and laboratory)
    • Fees: £2,550

    This course will take you on the journey from the hide to the high street.  Designing and testing your own leathers, along with market level analysis will enable you to fully appreciate the role of leather for both high street retailers and luxury brands.  With this increased knowledge, you will be able to reflect, address problems and make informed decisions when dealing with leather products in the commercial sector, ultimately providing a positive contribution to the success of both the product and business.   • Advanced Leather Finishing

    Leather finishing.

    Given the increasing importance of leather finishing in final product performance and compliance, using our tannery and laboratories, this course will enable you to critically evaluate the processes involved. Ideal for further developing existing knowledge.

    Quality Evaluation & Systematic Problem Solving

    Production flow, Quality, Specifications and Testing (physical and chemical).

    The modern business environment is complex, and technological issues are, inevitably, intertwined with commercial issues.  This module will allow the student to place the particular issues of leather technology and quality evaluation into the business context and help maximise the efficiency of leather production.

    Sustainable Development within the Leather Industry

    Waste treatment, BAT’s, Triple bottom line, Waste hierarchy, ISO14001, Carbon & water footprint, Deforestation, CSR, NGO’s.

    • Fees: £1,500

    This course enables you to develop knowledge and understanding regarding pollutants and their sources and evaluate clean technologies applied to minimise pollution load within leather processing. A range of social and environmental indicators relevant to the leather industry will also be assessed. Ideal for: supply chain management and compliance.

  • Creative Leather Applications

    Leather performance and suitability for end use.

    • Level: Advanced
    • Start Date: 14 June 2021

    • Fees: £800

    If you work with leather and want to learn more about its properties as a material, then this is the course for you! You will gain an understanding of the leather supply chain , different leather types and their performance plus the importance of quality specifications. This increased knowledge, along with designing and making your own leathers, will better place you to ensure your final leather products are fit for purpose. Ideal for: fashion and design students, sales and marketing personnel.
