Empowering Students Through AI: Insights from the StudySmart2 Project

The StudySmart2 Project, funded by the University of Northampton’s Learning and Teaching Enhancement Fund, set out to explore how students are engaging with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their academic lives. Through a series of interviews and focus groups, the project captured authentic student voices on the opportunities and challenges AI presents in higher education.

What Did We Learn?

Students are not just using AI—they’re critically engaging with it. From ChatGPT and CoPilot to Grammarly, AI tools are becoming embedded in their study routines. But what’s most striking is the thoughtfulness with which students are navigating this new landscape.

Many students see AI as a collaborative partner in their learning, helping them brainstorm ideas, clarify concepts, and improve their writing. But they’re also aware of the ethical boundaries.

Key Themes

  • AI as a Learning Companion: Students are using AI to scaffold their understanding, not replace it.
  • Digital Literacy Gaps: There’s a clear need for more structured guidance on how to use AI responsibly.
  • Assessment Anxiety: Students expressed concern about how AI use might be perceived by lecturers or impact academic integrity policies.
What’s Next?

The StudySmart2 Project is informing the development of AI literacy resources and staff development workshops at the University of Northampton. The goal? To foster a culture where AI is used ethically, creatively, and confidently.
