University of Northampton’s Innovative Approach to Enhancing Student Experience

Study Smart 2 is a collaborative initiative involving staff and students from various faculties and Professional Support departments. The project aims to develop innovative GenAI pedagogies that promote inclusive practices, improve GEM (Global Education Monitoring) student attainment, and address award gaps and Access and Participation Plan (APP) objectives.

Key Objectives and Innovative Approaches

The primary aim of Study Smart 2 is to identify how GenAI can positively impact student experience and achievement. The project has several key objectives:

  • Develop innovative GenAI pedagogies that promote inclusive practice and improve GEM student attainment.
  • Reconsider assessment and acknowledgement practices across disciplines to account for GenAI capabilities.
  • Enable students to explore and share effective uses of GenAI across disciplines.
  • Enable tutors to orchestrate innovative combinations of GenAI tools and activities to guide the learning process.
  • Share strategies for using GenAI for targeted student support, personalized learning strategies, and the design of inclusive and accessible learning environments

Addressing Learning and Teaching Challenges

Study Smart 2 addresses several critical challenges in learning and teaching:

  • Supporting students with diverse needs through the use of GenAI.
  • Developing collective insights through co-construction and involving student facilitators.
  • Focusing on the student experience across faculties and ensuring ethical use of GenAI.
  • Refining and developing tools to support both staff and students in using GenAI effectively
Evaluating Success and Impact
  • The success and impact of Study Smart 2 will be evaluated through various metrics, including meeting project milestones, monitoring attendance and participation at workshops, webinars, and podcasts, and evaluating the experiences of students running the GenAI sessions.
Conclusion
  • Study Smart 2 represents a significant advancement in the research of the use of GenAI in higher education. By focusing on inclusive practices and student co-creation, the University of Northampton is setting a new standard for how technology can be harnessed to enhance learning and teaching. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project and its impact on the educational landscape.
