University’s seminar series continues with focus on special educational needs

During the third in a series of free seminars, University of Northampton will bring together experts in learning to find out what higher education can learn from schools about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The seminar on Monday 13 April —Supporting SEND Students and Pupils: What Universities Can Learn from the School Sector—will take place between 11:30am to 1pm on MS Teams (register via the link).

Chaired by Professor Jane Murray, Professor of Education at UON, this seminar will explore the latest practices, expertise and environments developed in schools and specialist settings to better understand how to improve the transition between education stages for SEND pupils.

Professor Murray said: “Schools and specialist settings hold a wealth of insight into effective SEND support. This seminar brings that expertise into conversation with higher education so we can learn from each other, share what works, and improve the journey for SEND learners as they transition between phases.

“I’m delighted to welcome our exceptional speakers, whose combined experience will spark valuable discussion and practical ideas.”

Speakers for this seminar are:

  • Chris Lore, Head of Learning and Research, Spaghetti Bridge Ltd who’ll be sharing his experience of special schools and higher education in the USA and UK.
  • Recently retired Executive Headteacher Shez Webb MBE will speak about her experience leading Northgate School in Kingsthorpe—a state secondary school for pupils with SEND—and The Bee Hive, its vocational sixth‑form provision including a café, shop, garden shop and well‑being suite used to teach vital life and employability skills.
  • Samantha Eathorne, Principal, Beanfield Primary School will share her experience leading a mainstream primary school.
