The University of Northampton’s (UON) Waterside Campus is bathed in an orange glow this week as it supports the worldwide campaign for the safety of women and girls.
16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, runs from 25 November to 10 December and is led by the United Nations.
With studies showing that nearly a quarter of women in Europe have experienced abuse online, this year’s campaign is focussed on how technology is being used to harm women and girls.
To mark its commitment, UON has illuminated the tower of its Energy Centre at its Waterside Campus in orange, the official colour of the campaign.
This initiative was inspired by Hauwa Hamza, a proud UON alumna, registered midwife, and UN Women UK volunteer. Hauwa graduated in May 2023 with a degree in Midwifery and received the Julie Quilter Award for Dedication to Midwifery Excellence.
Reflecting on the importance of the campaign, Hauwa said: “The 16 Days campaign resonates with me deeply. As a midwife, I see how much safety, dignity and compassion matter for women, especially during pregnancy and birth.
“Gender-based violence affects confidence, mental health, family stability and communities. By speaking up, we honour survivors and challenge harmful norms. It is my hope that we are moving closer to a world where violence is not tolerated.”
Hauwa added: “The University shaped my midwifery journey and somewhat empowered me to be the advocate I am today.
“The University has long demonstrated a strong commitment to inclusion and widening participation in higher education.
“These principles align deeply with the mission of the 16 Days of Activism, and I believe the University’s participation sends an impactful message of solidarity and hope to students, staff, and the wider community.”
