The history of childhood explored at local landmark

Date 22.10.2018

Local landmark Delapré Abbey hosted 20 University of Northampton students as they explored the Abbey’s rich history; from its medieval origins to today as a local tourist hotspot, as part of a study trip.

The students, all in their second year studying Education Studies, took part in the visit as part of the History of Childhood module, which covers the experience of childhood from medieval to modern eras.

Dr Toby Purser, Senior Lecturer in Education said: “The study trip to Delapré was fascinating, we had a fabulous talk on the history of Delapré from medieval origins to modern times, encompassing its use as a nunnery, a country house, county record office and finally as a heritage centre open to the community. The study trip to this fantastic local landmark is designed to bring to life the theories and literature of medieval and early modern social history. Since its restoration Delapré Abbey has developed hands-on, interactive displays and storytelling, as well as formal taught sessions, tours and visits as part of the child-friendly visitor experience, an excellent bedrock on which the students can think about experiential learning and consider how the theory they have been learning is applied in practice.”

Later in the year, the students will visit the Museum of Childhood in London and the Newarke Houses Museum in Leicester.
