After developing a new reporting framework, Dr Doaa Aljamal, Senior Lecturer in Financial Accounting at University of Northampton has won the UK and Ireland prize for innovation at the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) Accounting Educator Awards 2025.
Over 530 applications and nominations were submitted for consideration from individuals and teams in North Asia, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Africa for the awards which honours educators spearheading pioneering initiatives that have a sustained impact on student learning.
The award recognises Dr Aljamal’s innovative project which bridged the gap between academia and industry to develop a new financial reporting framework that better accounts for intangible assets (non-physical, identifiable assets like patents, copyrights, trademarks, and goodwill) directly addressing a critical gap in modern valuation.
Not only does the award recognise her innovative academic work, testimonials from her nominators also highlight her effective impact as an educator, with one saying: “Dr Doaa Aljamal deserves an award for her outstanding leadership, mentorship, and lasting impact on the growth and confidence of those she supports, especially international students like me.”
Dr Aljamal said that current practice fails to reflect up to 80 per cent of the true value of knowledge-based firms and that her reporting framework could have a far-reaching impact.
She added: “The project’s last phase aims to coronate UON’s efforts by seeking access to the International Accounting Standard Board (IASB) and contributing to the biggest accounting overhaul in decades.
“I am profoundly grateful to my students and colleagues at UON for nurturing a space where we can all grow together and have a genuinely positive impact on our profession and for that to be recognised globally by the CGMA.”
UON Vice Chancellor and CEO, Professor Anne-Marie Kilday said: “Dr Aljamal and her work exemplifies everything we stand for at the University of Northampton, excellence and impact.
“Not only could her work change the accounting world for the better, but the award also took into account testimonials from her students which demonstrates she is giving the next generation the skills to reach their aspirations.”
The CGMA awards were founded by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA), and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) six years ago to empower leaders in accounting and finance around the globe.
Jan Taylor, CPA, CGMA, PhD, Senior Director, Academic and Student Engagement at AICPA and CIMA, said: “We are delighted to recognise passionate educators from around the world who have dedicated themselves to nurturing and developing curious, driven young accounting and finance talent. Day after day, they inspire their students to explore the many possibilities within the accounting and finance profession, support them to build technical and business skills, and grow their confidence as future professionals.
“It is an honour to celebrate their contributions to the profession and its future.”
