How ideas about femininity are circulating on social media today?

This webinar offers a glimpse into a fascinating area of interest within digital sociology by exploring how ideals of femininity are circulating within online culture today, particularly through the content of social media influencers and trends.

Led by staff on the BA Sociology team at the University of Northampton, this session introduces and explores some key ideas from feminist perspectives in sociology, media and cultural studies. Giving attendees a ‘taster’ of just one of the many unique areas of social life a sociology student might study, we use these ideas to examine recent representations of feminine identity on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Examples range from representations of ’empowered’ women who command public attention and respect – such as the It Girl, Office Sirens, or the Corporate Girlboss – to the promotion of ideas about ‘respectable’ femininity and gendered roles in the content of Tradwives, Wellness Girlies, and Clean Girls.

We look forward to you joining us for a thought-provoking but beginner-friendly discussion around what these social media trends can reveal about gender, identity, and society today.
